The FTDI FT232RNQ-REEL is a single-port USB to serial UART interface IC in a 32-pin QFN package on 500 um terminal pitch. It implements a USB 2.0 full-speed device and integrates both the oscillator and the configuration EEPROM on chip, so no external crystal or serial EEPROM is required. The supply range is 3.3 V to 5.25 V with a maximum supply current of 100 uA, and the device operates from -40 C to +85 C at a 900 um seated height.

USB to UART bridges give a host PC a virtual COM port over USB while presenting a plain asynchronous serial interface to the target microcontroller, which avoids implementing a USB stack in firmware. On-chip oscillator and EEPROM reduce the external component count to little more than decoupling capacitors. Typical users include designers of instrumentation and test equipment, industrial control and PLC interfaces, point-of-sale hardware, development and debug boards, and legacy RS-232 replacement adapters.
