The FT234XD-R is an FTDI USB to UART interface controller supporting USB 2.0 at data rates up to 3 Mbps. The FT234XD-R handles the entire USB protocol stack in hardware, presenting a simple asynchronous serial port to the host processor and appearing as a virtual COM port on the PC side. It is supplied in a 12-pin DFN package measuring 3 mm x 3 mm with a low 800 um height, on tape and reel.

USB to UART bridges exist because modern hosts no longer have RS-232 ports while most embedded devices still speak asynchronous serial, so the bridge provides a virtual COM port over USB. Parts like the FT234XD-R are used for debug and console access on embedded boards, firmware programming interfaces, USB-connected instruments, point-of-sale peripherals, and adding USB connectivity to a legacy microcontroller design.
