The FT230XQ-R is an FTDI USB-to-UART interface bridge supplied in a 16-pin QFN package measuring 4 mm x 4 mm. It provides a single channel converting USB to a basic UART, and per its FTDI part title it supports UART rates up to 3 Mbaud and can front RS232, RS422 and RS485 links through an external line transceiver. The FT230XQ-R handles USB at 12 Mbps full speed, operates from a 1.62 V to 5.5 V supply with 5 V nominal operation, and draws about 8 mA. It is lead free and RoHS compliant, rated -40 C to +85 C, and shipped on tape and reel.
USB-to-serial bridges give a host PC a virtual COM port over USB while the target side keeps a simple UART, which is why they appear on nearly every development board, programming dongle and instrument with a service interface. The FT230XQ-R handles the basic UART case without modem control lines, so it is used for firmware download and console access, USB-attached sensors and meters, point-of-sale and barcode peripherals, and adapter cables into RS232, RS422 or RS485 industrial buses. FTDI parts are commonly specified over cheaper alternatives because of mature, widely distributed driver support across Windows, macOS and Linux.
