The TDK ICM-42605 is a 6-axis inertial measurement unit combining a 3-axis accelerometer and a 3-axis gyroscope in one package. It operates from a 1.71V to 3.6V supply at 650µA and is rated for -40°C to 85°C. The device is supplied in a 14-terminal surface-mount package measuring 2.5mm by 3mm, with a thickness between 850µm and 970µm. ICM-42605 is an active production part introduced in April 2019.
An inertial measurement unit reports linear acceleration and angular rate, and fusing those six channels lets a system estimate its own orientation and motion without any external reference. Combining both sensors in one package saves board area and removes the mechanical alignment error that separate accelerometer and gyroscope placements introduce. Devices in this class are designed into drones and robotic platforms for attitude stabilization, wearables and fitness trackers for activity classification, AR and VR controllers and headsets for head and hand tracking, camera and gimbal image stabilization, and asset trackers detecting shock or tilt events. The sub-milliamp current draw is what makes continuous motion sensing viable in battery-powered products, and the small footprint suits handheld and wearable form factors.
