The TPS2051CDBVR is a Texas Instruments single-channel, current-limited power distribution switch intended for USB power. It delivers up to 500mA from a 4.5V to 5.5V supply with a 97 m Ohm switch resistance and draws 90uA of nominal supply current. The device is supplied in a 5-pin SOT-23 measuring 2.9mm x 1.6mm x 1.45mm, is rated -40C to 85C ambient with a 125C maximum junction temperature, and carries MSL 2. It is lead free, RoHS compliant, active and in current production, and ships on tape and reel at 3, 000 per reel.
A current-limited power switch sits between a 5V rail and a downstream port so that a short, an overload, or a faulty peripheral is contained rather than pulling down the host supply, and the fault is reported back to the controller. At 500mA the TPS2051CDBVR matches the USB 2.0 per-port budget, which is why it appears in USB host ports on PCs, laptops, docks and hubs, set-top boxes, monitors and televisions, automotive head units and charging ports, industrial and medical equipment with service ports, and any design that hot-plugs a peripheral or removable module.
