Galvanic isolation on an RS-485 link breaks the ground loop between nodes that sit on different power domains, which is the usual cause of data corruption and transceiver failure on long multidrop runs. Designers specify isolated transceivers for Modbus and Profibus field networks, motor drives and building automation buses, factory floor sensor networks, and any cable run that leaves an enclosure.
