The ADS1220IRVAR is a 24-bit delta-sigma analog-to-digital converter from Texas Instruments in a 16-pin VQFN measuring 3.5 mm square. It converts at up to 2 ksps over an SPI interface, runs from a 2.3 V to 5.5 V supply with separate analog and digital rails, and dissipates 2.1 mW. The device accepts both bipolar and unipolar input polarity and is specified over a -40 C to 125 C range. Delta-sigma architecture is what allows a low-power converter to reach 24-bit resolution, by oversampling the input and pushing quantisation noise out of the measurement band before digital filtering.

Low-power 24-bit converters with integrated amplification and excitation are used in sensor transmitters where the whole signal chain must fit a tight power budget: 4-20 mA loop-powered temperature and pressure transmitters, weigh scales and load-cell front ends, RTD and thermocouple measurement, and portable and battery-operated instruments. A 2 ksps ceiling with 2.1 mW dissipation is the trade the architecture makes to reach that resolution at that power.
