A hot swap controller manages the moment a board or module is inserted into a live system, ramping current into the load capacitance in a controlled way so the backplane rail does not collapse and the inrush does not damage connectors or components. It also provides the overcurrent and fault protection that lets a failed card be isolated without taking down the rail feeding its neighbours. Controllers in this class are designed into server and storage backplanes, hot-pluggable drive bays and line cards, telecom and network switch chassis, industrial rack systems, and any application where modules must be replaced without powering down.
