The Texas Instruments SN65HVD485EDR is an RS-485 interface transceiver in an 8-pin SOIC package, supplied on tape and reel. It integrates one driver/transmitter and one receiver for half-duplex operation at data rates up to 10 Mbps. The device operates from a 4.5 V to 5.5 V supply (5 V nominal) at 2 mA supply current and is rated -40 C to +85 C. SN65HVD485EDR is a production-status, lead-free, RoHS-compliant surface-mount device measuring 4.9 mm x 3.91 mm x 1.75 mm.

RS-485 is a differential, multidrop signaling standard: because data is carried as the difference between two wires, it rejects common-mode noise and works over long cable runs where single-ended signaling fails, and many nodes can share one twisted pair. A half-duplex transceiver drives and receives on the same pair, with the host asserting a direction control line, which is the standard arrangement for polled field buses. The SN65HVD485EDR is therefore used for Modbus RTU and Profibus-style links, building automation and HVAC networks, motor drives and PLC I/O, metering and submetering, elevator and access control systems, and long-run sensor networks in electrically noisy plant environments.
