A hardware RAID controller acknowledges writes once they reach its onboard cache, which is faster than waiting for the disks but leaves data in volatile memory exposed if power is lost mid-write. Cache protection options exist to close that window, preserving cached writes so the array is not left inconsistent after an unexpected shutdown, which is why write-back caching is normally only enabled when such protection is fitted.
